Co-Founder & CTO Industrial Hardware 3D Printing / Additive Manufacturing Brazil

Co-Founding a 3D Printer Manufacturer: From Garage to Industrial Product Line

"This is the engagement that made me who I am as a technology leader. I didn't just write code I built hardware, designed firmware, led a team, and shipped physical products to industrial customers. Every time I advise a founder today on the intersection of software and hardware, I'm drawing on what I learned building 3D printers from scratch."

The story

I co-founded a company that designed and manufactured 3D printers for the industrial market. As the sole software engineer at the start, I built every piece of technology the company needed from the 3D slicer that processed models for printing, to the printer firmware modifications, to the cloud monitoring platform, to the internal ERP system. As the company grew, I hired and led a development team of four engineers.

What I built

Custom 3D Slicer Software

Built from scratch a desktop application with 3D visualisation for processing models and preparing them for the printer firmware. WPF interface with OpenTK for real-time 3D rendering. This was the core intellectual property of the company.

Printer Firmware Modifications (C)

Modified the 3D printer firmware in C to support secure access over Ethernet implementing HTTPS calls to REST APIs using libcurl. Bridging low-level embedded code with cloud connectivity.

Cloud-Based Printer Monitoring Platform

Designed a data-first cloud platform using CockroachDB clustering with interleaved tables for performance, a domain layer built on SOLID principles, and a REST API for printer and ERP communication. Enabled customer support to monitor printer health remotely in real-time.

Print Job Spool Management System

Server-side application managing print queues with user access control. REST API communicating with both 3D printers and client interfaces on the intranet. Smart UI approach for operator-friendly job management.

Internal Web ERP System

When the company needed internal tooling, I chose to adopt .NET Core while it was still in beta a technical bet that paid off. Built with Domain-Driven Design, CQRS pattern with PostgreSQL and NoSQL, and continuous deployment. Led a team of four developers using Agile methodology with UX validation.

Why this matters for my clients today

This experience is the reason I can advise across the full technology stack. I've written firmware in C and designed cloud platforms. I've built desktop applications and web ERPs. I've managed a hardware BOM and led a software team. When a founder tells me they're building a connected physical product, I don't need to Google what a PCB is I've soldered them.

Capabilities demonstrated

Hardware startup co-founding
Firmware development (C)
3D visualisation & desktop apps
Cloud IoT platform architecture
ERP system design
Engineering team building
Domain-Driven Design & CQRS
Physical product development

Earlier experience

Prior to the 3D printing venture, I built my technical foundations designing hardware and software interfaces for an LED panel manufacturer including developing a custom communication interface using TTL logic gates and providing IT infrastructure services across government institutions.

The pattern across every engagement

Whether it's a Top 3 bank or a garage startup, the approach is the same: understand the business context, make technology decisions that serve commercial goals, and leave the team stronger than I found them.
